Research & Demonstration
One of the goals to the Center is to support practical research and demonstration whenever possible. Since the early 1980’s the area has been the site of many studies and research projects related to herbicides, fire, wildlife, forest management and more.
Previous research projects include:
- “Ecology and evolution of antipredator strategies to fire ants” through Penn State University,
- “Landscape Genetics of the gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) and prevalence of mycoplasma agassizi” through the University of New Orleans,
- “Factors Influencing the Plasticity of thermal energetics of population of bats during winter” through the University of Regina, Saskatuan
- “The Pathogenicity and Virulence of Leptographium species on Southern Pine Hosts” through Auburn University
- “Fire & Fire Surrogate Study”, a long-term study to understand effects of alternative methods for fuel reduction and forest restoration conducted in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service,
- The Longleaf Alliance maintains several study & demonstration sites across the Center pertaining to seedling quality, planting depth, site preparation, fertilization and herbaceous release of longleaf pine. These are long-term replicates and will continue to be monitored as time and budget allows.
