Longleaf Restoration and Management

With decline in acres of longleaf across its range and a growing interest to maintain and recapture those acres, longleaf pine became a focal point for the Center in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Timber stands that had existing longleaf have been maintained and propagated toward longleaf by the use of prescribed fire, the removal of other species during timber harvest and natural regeneration. Many other sites have also been converted to longleaf through timber harvest and reforestation with longleaf seedlings. Today, many longleaf stands exist (both natural & planted) that are maintained with regular prescribed fire to produce an open, lush understory of native plants.
