The Longleaf Alliance

As acres in longleaf continued to decline across its historic range, an interest began to emerge in the early 1990’s toward managing natural stands of longleaf while reestablishing other sites through artificial regeneration.  With no real entity available to provide factual information pertaining to management of longleaf, the Longleaf Alliance began to take shape.  In 1995 the Longleaf Alliance was formed through the efforts of Rhett Johnson at the Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center and Dean Gjerstad at Auburn University.  The mission of this new organization was to “promote the ecological and economic values of longleaf ecosystems”.

Today the Longleaf Alliance continues to base its headquarters out of the Dixon Center and continues to be a thriving organization reaching landowners, managers and agencies across the range of longleaf and beyond http://www.longleafalliance.org.
