Profession Information

Laboratory scientists analyze specimens and produce evidence utilized in many fields, healthcare and non-healthcare related. They are trained to work with a range of instrumentation from time accredited manual methods to fully automated analyzers. Public health, biotechnology, forensics, environmental testing, research, drug testing, industry, vet clinics, and many more field positions can be held with a BS in Laboratory Science.

Medical laboratory scientists are active “healthcare detectives” working behind the scenes to provide laboratory analysis on body fluid samples with results influencing prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of disease. In addition to providing results, their expertise can aid in the detection of infectious diseases, heart attacks, cancer, diabetes, and the list goes on. They are integral members of the healthcare team and directly contribute to quality patient care. There are many disciplines including hematology, chemistry, immunology, transfusion medicine, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, and more! Everyone can find something they love. The BS in Medical Laboratory Science and MLS certification is available through completion of a NAACLS accredited clinical internship. Refer to the Internship Information tab for more details.
