Lean Operating Culture and Practice

This three-part certificate program provides a solid understanding of lean operating culture by focusing on the implementation of a lean management system, strategy development and execution and the application of lean daily management and practical problem solving.

This program is offered in several flexible formats including online and onsite.

A lean operating culture can be developed through the implementation of a lean management system that focuses on leaders’ behavior, specific expectations, tool and routine practices. This module focuses on comprehending organizational culture in a general sense and more specifically on managing the change that must happen to implement the lean practices that will culminate a strong lean operating culture.

Strategy development and execution requires effort and participation throughout the organization. In this module, the strategy development and execution process is explained. This includes a presentation of a strategy development and execution process based on the Toyota Hoshin Planning process. The process includes the development of the mission, vision, goals, objectives and tasks that are all necessary to execute organizational strategy. The lesson concludes with a practical application through a Strategy Offsite where the students’ home organization’s leadership team is facilitated through the process to develop an executable strategy with follow up review sessions.

Lean daily management (LDM) and practical problem solving are fundamental lean execution practices. LDM provides a transparent, day-to- day means of communicating the status of an organization’s operations in support of its strategy execution. This lesson presents an overview of the Lean “respect for people” concepts and provides tools and techniques for LDM. The two primary purposes of LDM are communication of mission status and problem solving. The latter purpose is addressed by the introduction of the Practical Problem Solving Model (PPSM), commonly known as the 8 Step Problem solving model. This model, developed by the Toyota company, is a problem-solving method important to executing strategy in an organization. This lesson concludes with a workshop to develop LDM boards as a model to spread throughout the students’ facility.
