Auburn University, University of Texas Professors Awarded $90k NSF Award to Study Hawaiian Habitats Created by Volcanic Eruption

When the volcano Kīlauea erupted in Hawaii in 2018, the outpouring of lava created new, unusual habitats on the island of Hawaii. Auburn University Professor and Chair of Biological Sciences Scott Santos, along with his former graduate student Justin Havird, recently received a two-year, $90,055 Rapid Response Research (RAPID) award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study these new habitats.

Physics Alumnus Presents at Conferences, Publishes Research in “Nature Physics” and Pursues Doctorate Degree at Purdue University

Pursuing an education in physics has given James Nakamura the opportunity to present at conferences in both France and Japan, have his work published in Nature Physics while earning his doctorate degree at Purdue University, and solidify his career goal as a research scientist. Nakamura graduated from Auburn University with his undergraduate degree as a double-major in physics and chemical engineering in 2014. He is currently at Purdue University earning his Ph.D. in physics.

Recent Auburn University graduate Sydney Sommers plans to use her degree through the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) to do the important work that will allow doctors to make patient diagnoses. Originally from Huntsville, Ala., Sydney recently graduated with a degree in clinical laboratory science and plans to work in a hospital laboratory.

Billor to serve as Coordinator of Statistics and Data Science Programs and Han to serve as Director of the Actuarial Science Program

Associate Chair Ash Abebe announces that Nedret Billor has agreed to serve as Coordinator of Statistics and Data Science Programs and Maggie Han has agreed to serve as Director of the Actuarial Science Program. Most recently the coordination of the statistics program was performed by Abebe (with help from the stat faculty) and the actuarial science program was directed by Dmitry Glotov (with help from Maggie).   Nedret will help manage the MS-Statistics, MPS, and MS-DSE programs as well as coordinate the teaching of statistics and data science courses. She will be assuming her role on 16 May.   Maggie will oversee our largest undergraduate major, ACTU, and lead the development of a master's program in the area. She will also be our representative with the Society of Actuaries. She will be assuming her role on 16 August.     Thanks to Nedret and Maggie for their willingness to serve.
