Invest in Your Health

A High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) is a health insurance option with lower monthly premiums but higher out-of-pocket costs. Unlike traditional plans with copays and lower deductibles, you’ll pay more upfront for care until you meet your deductible. After that, the plan helps cover eligible expenses.

Key Things to Know

  • Auburn’s HDHP is managed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama (BCBS)—just like the PPO plan.

  • You can use the same BCBS network whether you're in Alabama or traveling.

  • The HDHP can be paired with a Health Savings Account (HSA), which lets you save pre-tax money to help pay for medical costs.

  • Preventive care may be covered at no cost, even before you meet your deductible.

If you choose the HDHP:

  • You’ll pay full retail price for prescriptions until you meet your deductible.

  • Some preventive medications are covered before the deductible. These include drugs for:

    • Heart disease
    • Diabetes
    • Blood pressure
    • Cholesterol
    • Contraception
    • Bone density
    • Respiratory conditions
    • Depression/anxiety (SSRIs)
    • Diabetic supplies and devices

Once you meet the deductible, copays return to previous amounts.
