Foreign National Employment – New Hire

As a foreign national, additional procedures are required to ensure that the proper work authorization status is obtained and successfully verified through a Form I-9 and E-Verify process. At Auburn, several departments may collaborate with you -- the Hiring Department, the Office of International Programs*, the Office of Tax Compliance and Human Resources. These departments will provide support and guidance to ensure that proper documentation is obtained and verified prior to your appointment beginning. (*The Office of International Programs issues documents for F-1 and J-1 students, J-1 scholars and H1-B sponsorships. For further assistance, email intledu@auburn.edu.)

Generally you will begin as a SEVIS check-in and end with the Human Resources department. However, depending on your status, it may vary which is why it is important to be diligent and seek further guidance.

As a new hire, you must not begin work until:

  1. Your work authorization is obtained.

  2. The tax compliance process is completed.

  3. Your status is verified through the Form I-9, and your E-Verify (work authorization) has been successfully completed.

Working out of status may result in the inability to obtain future statuses and/or more serious implications, such as deportation.

Our primary goal is to get you to work as quickly as possible while following all established policies and procedures while remaining compliant with regulations.

Foreign National Employment – Change in Status/Reverification of Status

If you have temporary work status, you will require an extension of status, or a change in status, to continue working beyond the current, established legal dates of employment. Depending on the status, it will be necessary to follow procedures for filing for an extension of status to remain working legally in the position.

Auburn provides support and guidance following internal policies for sponsorship (where applicable) and assistance where needed for statuses to be extended. There are offices available to offer support and guidance. Generally, you will begin with the Office of International Programs, followed by the Office of Tax Compliance, and end with Human Resources.  All of these offices will provide information to you. However, depending on your status, it may vary which is why it is important to be diligent and seek further guidance. Your Human Resources Liaison may also provide guidance and direction.

Our goal is to ensure that you do not have a break in employment by maintaining your work authorization. However, it is dependent upon following through with actions needed and a commitment to ensure your work authorization is re-verified through a Form I-9 process. It is important that you do not work without the proper documentation and have completed the necessary steps:

  1. Work Authorization Extended or Change of Status Approved

  2. Completion of Tax Compliance Form

  3. Completion of Form I-9 Reverification

  4. Updated in HR Information System
