Auburn biologist receives $1.2 million NSF CAREER award for work testing evolutionary biology theory

Matthew Wolak, an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, is a recipient of a $1,268,000 National Science Foundation, or NSF, CAREER award from the Division of Environmental Biology to conduct the first causal test of an evolutionary biology theory in almost an entire century.

COSAM graduate students lead coding workshop for underrepresented adolescents

On Saturday, March 25th, five elementary and middle school students from the Auburn/Opelika area showcased projects they had coded and built themselves during CODEWorks. Developed by COSAM graduate students Jalaan Avritte and Ashley Williams, Williams explained that “the purpose [of CODEWorks] is to expose and teach historically underrepresented groups in STEM about coding skill sets to try and give them the skills to be successful in the field.” Over the course of seven workshops, the fourth to seventh grade students were taught basic coding, came up with their own idea for a project and were given the resources and assistance to build that project.

This is the feeling that Dr. Frank Ivy Carroll enjoyed the most during his time here on the plains. After graduating with a degree in Chemistry in 1957 he’s displayed the Auburn Spirit through his later studies and career. Dr. Carroll is prominently known for his achievements and advancements in drug research and discovery.

Auburn University hosts in-person state-wide science and engineering fair for the first time

Auburn University welcomed almost 200 of the brightest and most creative middle and high school minds for the Alabama State Science and Engineering Fair (ASEF) to the new Academic Classroom and Laboratory Complex (ACLC) on Saturday, April 1. Students from 47 different schools throughout Alabama presented posters of their independent research to over 150 judges from across the state while competing for nearly $15,000 in awards. Presenting in research competitions can be intimidating, but these 6th through 12th grade students were experienced presenters by the time they visited the Plains. To qualify for ASEF they won their local and regional science fairs.

DMS's Dr. Melinda Lanius has been selected as one of the winners of AU’s Outstanding Graduate Mentor Awards for 2022-23. This award recognizes “faculty members who go above and beyond their duty as teachers, advisors, and mentors.” Winners are nominated by their graduate students and selected by the Graduate Student Council. Melinda will be recognized at the Graduate Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 28.

This year’s Duncan Memorial Lecture offers an exciting evening celebrating both the arts and sciences in one event. Anna Frebel, professor of physics and head of astrophysics at the MIT Kavil Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research, will give a theatrical performance as nuclear physicist Lise Meitner and then return to herself and speak on the topic of Understanding the origins of the elements on Thursday, April 13 at 4:45 p.m. in the Sciences Center Auditorium.
