Title: Algebraic curves from function fields

This is a promotional talk for my lecture notes of the same name, a draft of part of which is posted in .pdf format on www.auburn.edu/~leonada.

The point of the talk (chapter 12 of the notes) is that algebraic curves are not geometric objects but rather algebraic objects, namely sets of (equivalence classes of proper) ring isomorphisms from a function field (of dimension 1) into a formal Laurent series ring.
