Graduate Students

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers programs leading to the Master of Science in Mathematics, the Master of Science in Statistics, the non-thesis Master of Applied Mathematics, the Master of Probability and Statistics, and the Doctor of Philosophy (with concentrations in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics). In addition, the Department regularly offers actuarial science courses that are approved by both the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society; these courses are designed to provide the background and material covered in the first three (3) actuarial exams.

Admission to the program is based on a student's undergraduate record, three letters of recommendation from former teachers, GRE scores (GRE subject test is not required), and the graduate GPA for Ph.D. applicants. Full admissions information for prospective students may be found on our site.

Most students in the program are supported financially during their studies through

  • Graduate Teaching Assistantships, including a waived tuition and a monthly stipend,
  • several graduate student fellowships awarded annually to qualified students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and
  • occasional Graduate Research Assistantships available in conjunction with departmental contractual research programs.
