Due to COVID-19, Auburn University has expanded the use of Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading for Spring Semester 2020 as follows.

Faculty will assign A-F letter grades as normal for Spring 2020 courses. After final grades are posted, students will have the opportunity to convert, on a course-by-course basis, each letter grade to an SP, SS, or UU:

  • SP – equivalent to a C or better for undergraduate and professional courses, B or better for graduate courses
    • Grade does not calculate into GPA
    • Student receives credit for the course
    • Course will count towards core, major, minor and certificate requirements
  • SS – equivalent to a D for undergraduate and professional courses, C for graduate courses
    • Grade does not calculate into GPA
    • Student receives credit for the course
    • Course will count towards core, major, minor and certificate requirements unless a grade of C or better is required in the course (B or better for graduate courses)
  • UU – equivalent to an F for undergraduate and professional courses, D and F for graduate courses
    • Grade does not calculate into GPA
    • Student receives no credit for the course

A note will be added to transcripts defining SP and SS grades as “Satisfactory” and UU grades as “Unsatisfactory.”

Students will have until June 1, 2020 to work with their advisor on converting grades, as desired. Further details of the conversion process will be available by April 15.

All students are eligible to convert final letter grades to SP, SS, or UU.

Student-athletes, international students, honors students, ROTC students, and students utilizing scholarship, financial aid, and/or VA benefits should take special care to consult with advisors in these areas to ensure they understand all implications prior to requesting a conversion.

Any letter grade from any course taken in Spring 2020 can be converted to SP, SS, or UU with the exception of F grades earned for academic dishonesty.

There is no cap on the number of grades a student can convert to SP, SS, or UU for Spring 2020.

SP, SS, and UU grades do not calculate into your term or cumulative grade point average.

Courses converted to SP will count towards core, major, minor and certificate requirements.

Courses converted to SS will count towards core, major, minor and certificate requirements unless a grade of C or better is required in the course (B or better for graduate courses).

UU grades will not count towards any academic requirements.

All requests must be made by June 1, 2020. Details of the conversion process will become available on or before April 15.

Details of the process will become available on or before April 15.

For Spring 2020 you should convert an F grade to UU instead of using a GAP.

Students are not required to inform faculty of their intention to convert a grade but may consult with faculty about any implications for future plans.

  • The Honors College will only accept honors courses and contracts converted to SP for Honors College credit.

This policy aligns with our existing policy of only accepting grades of a C or higher for honors credit.

  • The Honors College will not drop anyone for GPA (spring 2020 only).

The Honors College will still place students on academic warning whose spring 2020 grades fall below our required GPA minimums: 3.0 cumulative unadjusted AU GPA for first year students and 3.2 cumulative unadjusted AU GPA for second year students and above. Students who are currently on warning and do not raise their GPA to the required minimums will stay on warning through their next full term. Any GPA increases from courses converted using the Auburn University Spring 2020 S/U Grading policy will be taken into consideration for students’ honors academic standing. The Honors College will still suspend students at the end of spring 2020 for lack of progress, though we will practice leniency in making these decisions.
