Jr. Mad Scientist outreach event embodies COSAM's commitment to impactful service

On November 3 and 5, the Graduate Women in Science (GWIS) student organization hosted its annual Jr. Mad Scientist outreach event, with the support of the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) Outreach Department. Jr. Mad Scientist is a free community event GWIS looks forward to hosting each Fall. It is an open house style event for children in 1st-5th grades in which children and their chaperone(s) browse tables, participate in demonstrations, and complete make and take activities, learning throughout the night from graduate students in STEM from across the university.

COSAM’s proven path helps 77 biomedical sciences students gain acceptance into health professions programs

“A total of 77 students who majored in biomedical sciences and participated in COSAM’s PPAC program were accepted into professional schools during the 2020 application cycle,” explained Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Robert Boyd in the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM). “Of these 77 students, 73 entered leading medical or dental schools and 4 enrolled in optometry school programs.”

The COSAM Office of Inclusion, Equity and Diversity (OIED) has awarded the 2020 Inclusive Excellence in STEM Faculty award to Dr. Stephanie L. Shepherd, Assistant Professor in the Department of Geosciences, and the Inclusive Excellence in STEM Student award to Abby Beatty, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Biological Sciences. About her recognition, Abby Beatty stated, “I honestly can't think of any award I have ever received that means as much as this one.”

COSAM Office of Outreach continues to offer science-centered family fun events

This Fall, COSAM Outreach premiered a new series of family events called “COSAM Campfires.” The Donald E. Davis Arboretum provided the perfect backdrop for these outdoor gatherings. Family units took seats in the grass with snacks and crafts while waiting for the presentations to begin. Faux fires from solar lights designated the socially distanced family spots, and a tissue paper and twinkle light fire display created a center piece for photos.
