Why are August ceremonies being held in Jordan-Hare Stadium?

The university is hosting combined ceremonies in Jordan-Hare Stadium to provide a venue large enough to support necessary safety protocols while allowing graduates to have guests.

For those who are unable to attend the ceremony, Auburn will provide a live web-stream of the ceremonies on the Commencement website at www.auburn.edu/commencement.

What time will the commencement ceremonies start?

The August Commencement schedule is as follows:

Morning Ceremony: 7:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

  • Architecture, Design and Construction

  • Business

  • Engineering

  • Nursing

  • Forestry and Wildlife Sciences

Evening Ceremony 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

  • Agriculture

  • Education

  • Human Sciences

  • Liberal Arts

  • Sciences and Mathematics

What time should graduates arrive at the stadium?

Graduates should arrive at the stadium and be seated no later than an hour prior to the start of the ceremony. Graduates will enter Jordan-Hare Stadium through the Petrie Parking Lot, located on the north-end of the stadium and accessible from the Thach Concourse.

What time can guests arrive at the stadium?

Gates open two hours prior to each ceremony.

What time will commencement end?

Each commencement ceremony is expected to last approximately two and a half hours. Out of courtesy and respect for other graduates and for the speakers who follow them, graduates are asked to return to their seats after walking across the stage and remain until the end of the ceremony.

Do graduates have to wear a face covering?

All graduates will be required to wear a mask upon entering Jordan-Hare Stadium. They will be allowed to remove their mask when proceeding across the stage when their name is called.

All guests must follow the current State of Alabama orders regarding face coverings at the time of Commencement. If not required, guests are highly encouraged to wear face coverings.

What safety measures are in place for commencement?

Due to COVID-19, additional safety protocols will be in place:

  • Face Coverings: Required for all graduates. Guests attending Commencement in the Auburn Arena (Pharmacy and Vet Med) are required to wear face coverings. Guests attending Commencement in Jordan-Hare Stadium must follow the current State of Alabama orders regarding face coverings at the time of Commencement. If not required, guests are highly encouraged to wear face coverings.

  • Physical Distancing: Guests/groups of guests will be asked to physically distance in the stands. Graduates will be spaced apart to allow for practicable physical distancing.

  • Hand Sanitizer: Stations will be provided as students enter the field and walk up the ramp to the stage.

  • Disinfecting: Chairs and bleachers will be disinfected in-between ceremonies.

The following Auburn Athletics safety protocols will be in place for all guests entering Jordan-Hare Stadium:

  • Clear Bag Policy: Guests must adhere to Auburn Athletics’ Clear Bag Policy for entry into Jordan-Hare Stadium, permitting a small clutch purse, with or without a handle or strap, along with either a 12” by 6” by 12” clear tote bag or a one-gallon freezer bag.

  • Metal Detectors: Guests are required to pass through metal detectors.

What happens in the event of bad weather?

Although August is one of the lowest rainfall months of the year, the university will follow one of the following contingency plans in the event of inclement weather:

Plan A: If on graduation day there is light rainfall, we will proceed with the ceremonies. The audience will be allowed to bring umbrellas. All participants on the field will be given clear ponchos.

Plan B: If the rainfall is more than “light,” the ceremony will be postponed to a new start time that will be announced on the commencement website and via social media/email to graduates.

Plan C: If more significant weather is forecasted, the alternate weather plan is to move Commencement to the Auburn Arena, where it will be conducted in two ceremonies (times TBD). However, due to limited seating and the need for social distancing, graduates will not be allowed to bring any guests into the Arena. An announcement will be e-mailed to graduates and posted on the Commencement website at the time of the decision. The ceremonies will be live streamed via the Auburn University Commencement website at www.auburn.edu/commencement.

Will graduates be limited in the number of guests they bring?

Students are asked to limit guests to eight or less. All guests are required to physically distance inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. Guests are asked to sit in groups and maintain at least six feet between other families. Seating is available on a first-come, first served basis.

If the ceremony is moved to the Auburn Arena due to severe weather, guests will not be permitted. The ceremony can be viewed live on the Auburn University Commencement website at www.auburn.edu/commencement.

Where can graduates and guests park?

Auburn University has worked extensively with the City of Auburn to ensure we can provide adequate parking for all graduates and their guests. Please visit this parking map to view all available parking areas

How can guests get from the parking lot(s) to the stadium

Golf carts will begin running at 5:00 a.m. to designated parking lots (identified on the parking map).

Face coverings are required to ride.

Is tailgating permitted?

No, tailgating is not permitted prior to August Commencement.

What gates do graduates and guests enter through?

Guests should enter the stadium through Gates 1-4 and 12-14. Graduates should enter the stadium through Petrie Parking Lot. These gates are shown on the stadium layout at www.auburn.edu/commencement.

Will concessions be sold?

Yes, concession stands will be open inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. Guests are allowed to bring in one unopened, factory-sealed bottle of water (up to one liter in size).

What should graduates wear under their regalia?

Due to the August temperatures, all graduates are encouraged to wear light, comfortable clothing under their regalia. However, please be mindful that all graduates will be asked to remove or lift up their gown upon entering Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Can graduates wear high heels?

High heels are not permitted on the field at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Chairs will be placed on the grass, making it difficult and unsafe to walk in high heels. Please wear flats or low wedges.

What should guests wear?

Guests should dress comfortably and be prepared for warmer temperatures

Can guests go onto the field after the ceremony?

No, guests are not permitted on the football field.

Can guests and graduates bring an umbrella?

Yes, guests may bring umbrellas into the stadium for Commencement. Please be courteous of other guests when using umbrellas. Graduates may not bring in an umbrella.

Will graduates be able to walk across the stage?

Yes, all graduates will walk across the stage and have their name called. However, no physical contact, including handshakes, are permitted with the stage party. Graduates will still receive their Auburn Creed print and Alumni pin. Families can see their graduate on the stadium screen.

Will Photographic Services take photos during graduation?

Yes, Photographic Services will take pictures of each graduate as they walk across the stage. Proofs can be viewed and purchased online within two weeks of the commencement ceremony. A proof is mailed to graduates approximately three weeks after the commencement ceremony. Personal pictures should be taken either before or after the ceremony.

Can guests take photos, flash photography, and videos during the event?

Flash photography and large, free-standing cameras are not permitted. Phones and cameras are allowed.

Will anything be handed to the graduates when they cross the stage?

Graduates will receive a copy of The Auburn Creed and their official Auburn Alumni Pin. No handshakes or physical contact with the stage party is permitted.

How do graduates get their diploma?

Diplomas are mailed to graduates approximately six-eight weeks following commencement. An email is sent to the graduate’s Auburn University email address once their diploma ships.

What can graduates and guests bring into Jordan-Hare Stadium?

All graduates and guests must adhere to Jordan-Hare Stadium’s safety protocols. For a list of prohibited items, please visit the Auburn Athletics gameday policy.

Graduates:

  • Graduates may NOT take purses or backpacks onto the field

  • Graduates are permitted to bring a small camera and/or a cell phone that can either be left in their seat or placed in their pocket when crossing the stage.

  • Graduates may NOT bring alcoholic beverages, inflatable objects, silly strong, balls or any other toys.

  • Graduates may NOT bring any liquids into the Stadium. Bottled water will be provided free of charge.

Guests

  • Guests are permitted to bring umbrellas in the event of light rain (must fit inside clear bag).

  • Guests are permitted to bring in one clear bag (no bigger than 4.5”x3.4”), a gallon zip top bag, a seat cushion, a clutch or small purse, and a wallet. Prohibited items include backpacks, camera cases, diaper bags, oversized bags, large purses, or tinted plastic bags.

  • Guests are required to pass through metal detectors and asked to check their bags. Please be respectful of security personnel and allow additional time to enter the Stadium. Gates are open two hours prior to the ceremony start time.

Will there be graduation programs?

All graduates and guests will receive a combined Spring/Summer Commencement Program.

Will professional photos be taken when the students cross the stage?

Photographic Services will take pictures of each graduate as they walk across the stage. Proofs can be viewed and purchased online within two weeks of the commencement ceremony. A proof is also mailed to graduates approximately three weeks after the commencement ceremony. Personal pictures should be taken either before or after the ceremony.

Anything else I need to know?

  • The First Aid Stations are located adjacent to Section 46 on the main concourse, East Upper Deck, and West Upper Deck. For emergencies, please call 911.

  • Please dress appropriately for the weather in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

  • Smoking is not permitted inside Jordan-Hare Stadium.
