Students in COMP 2240 build 3D graph models using spaghetti and marshmallows.

Auburn’s COMP 2240: Discrete Structures course has been transformed into a dynamic, hands-on learning experience. Students now explore complex concepts through creative, tactile activities—like building spaghetti towers and solving graph theory scavenger hunts—designed to make math feel approachable and engaging.

This innovative model was developed by Joanie Morris, lecturer in COSAM, during her PhD studies. Her flipped-classroom approach blends short prep videos, collaborative classwork, and interactive online resources to help students “actually touch the math.”

Melinda Lanius, assistant professor of mathematics, praised the course for using real-world metaphors to cut through abstract notation. “It helps students connect more deeply with the material,” she said, noting the method’s roots in cognitive science.
