Alex Baty will graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences after only three years.

During his time at Auburn, Alex was very involved in research in the Geoff Hill’s lab working under Ph.D. candidate Matthew Powers. In the Hill lab, Alex researched the possibility of the Shared-Pathway hypothesis as a cellular explanation for the connection between ketocarotenoid pigmentation and individual quality in copepods.

On campus, Alex worked at the Auburn University Recreation and Wellness Center from January 2020 to May 2021. He has also spent time volunteering with Individuals Moving People Across Communities Together (IMPACT), a community outreach initiative involving Auburn students. In his time as an IMPACT volunteer, Alex was also a project coordinator for one year, supervising a project at an after-school tutoring center in Auburn.

An important off campus experience for Alex during his time at Auburn was found through volunteering at Mercy Medical Clinic. Mercy Medical Clinic is a clinic in Auburn dedicated to providing faith-based medical care to uninsured patients in Auburn and the entire East Alabama area. As a volunteer, Alex was responsible for triaging patients, which included taking vital signs and preparing them for the doctor.

As Alex prepares to graduate, he is so thankful for his time at Auburn University and all of the opportunities he has had here. He is grateful for all the faculty and peers he met at Auburn who have supported him and provided him with opportunities to succeed. Alex is so humbled to be presented with the Dean’s Medal award. He is especially thankful for God, his family, and his girlfriend Rachel who have supported and encouraged him throughout his time at Auburn.

After graduation, Alex will attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham in pursuit of a Master of Science degree in Health Physics.
