“The College of Sciences and Mathematics aims to make an impact in everything we do,” explained Dean Nicholas J. Giordano. “This celebration was an opportunity for our college to make an impact on our graduates and their families, and show them how truly proud we are of their accomplishments.”

More than 50 graduates from the Spring and Summer 2020 semester for the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) and 220 of their families attended the event on Saturday, August 9. Students had an opportunity to take photos with Dean Giordano outside of the Sciences Center Auditorium with proper social distancing since the university’s commencement was postponed.

MiKaela White, who was a recipient of a scholarship at the 23rd Annual Dean’s Annual Scholarship Golf Classic, was excited to share the moment with her mother who proudly watched as her photo was taken. White was part of a study abroad trip with COSAM in 2019 to the Dominican Republic.

“Matt is our third child to graduate from Auburn, so we wanted to be part of this event,” Diane Young said. “We drove here from Florence, Alabama, and picked Matt up where he has already started veterinary school at the University of Alabama Birmingham.”

Katherine Buchanan, a 2020 Dean’s Medalist in Biomedical Sciences, spoke with the dean and shared information about her beginning medical school. This future pediatrician is at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Wade Jones, a former president of the COSAM Leaders, brought his mother to celebrate.

“I wouldn’t miss today, and I sincerely appreciate all that Dean Giordano and Dr. Boyd are doing for the graduates,” Jones said. He is anticipating starting Auburn’s rural medicine program this fall.

Graduates and their guests had an opportunity to get gift bags, Glomeratas and more. Graduates also signed their names to branches on a tree of a poster to commemorate their graduation.
