Eleven members of Auburn University’s chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) enjoyed a forest restoration workshop presented by Dr. Sharon Hermann and Dr. John Kush. Starting with a brief Powerpoint presentation on forest history and restoration in Alabama, we then visited two field sites on campus. One site hosted longleaf pines more than 200 years old but which has not been managed with fire to maintain its original community, whereas the other site (a planted pine stand) has been thinned, burned and planted with longleaf pine seedlings. This was an excellent chance for students to talk to these experts and learn about forest restoration and fire ecology!
