Paul D. Hill and Krystyna Kuperberg: Fellows of the American Mathematical Society

The Fellows of the American Mathematical Society program recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics. Two distinguished mathematicians Paul D. Hill and Krystyna Kuperberg have accepted the Fellows invitation.

Dr. Paul D. Hill Professor Emeritus earned his Ph.D. from Auburn University in 1960 and was a member of the Mathematics & Statistics faculty from 1961-1963, 1976-1985, and 1988-2000. His research area is Algebra.

Dr. Krystyna Kuperberg earned her Ph.D. from Rice University in 1974 and joined the faculty of the Mathematics & Statistics Department that same year. Her research areas are dynamical system, topology, analysis and geometry.

The Fellows will be inducted at a ceremony at the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) in San Diego. San Diego, January 9-12, 2013 http://jointmathematicsmeetings.org/jmm. The JMM is the world's largest mathematics meeting organized by the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

The goals of the Fellows program are:

  • To create an enlarged class of mathematicians recognized by their peers as distinguished for their contributions to the profession.
  • To honor not only the extraordinary but also the excellent.
  • To lift the morale of the profession by providing an honor more accessible than those currently available.
  • To make mathematicians more competitive for awards, promotion, and honors when they are being compared with colleagues from other disciplines.
  • To support the advancement of more mathematicians in leadership positions in their own institutions and in the broader society.
