Associate Dean of Academic Affairs

College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM)

The College of Sciences and Mathematics, or COSAM, and its five academic departments currently serve around 3,100 undergraduate majors and close to 370 graduate students who are pursuing one of 16 undergraduate and 12 graduate degree options in the biological, physical and mathematical sciences. COSAM also plays an integral role in core and service course instruction that impacts all Auburn students. The college is committed to maintaining strong curricula, outstanding instruction and effective academic advisement to all students. COSAM is seeking an energetic individual to lead these efforts as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, or ADAA, beginning Aug. 15, 2012.

The ADAA is responsible for all matters broadly related to academic programs and student affairs. Duties include formulation of academic policies and procedures; transmission of curricular material to the provost, University Curriculum Committee,  Board of Trustees or Alabama Commission on Higher Education; coordination of recruiting activities and academic and pre-professional school advising programs (in collaboration with the director of Student Services and the director of the Pre-Health Professions Program); adjudication and approval of course substitutions and exceptions to university academic/student affairs policies; management of COSAM’s scholarship and summer teaching budgets; supervision of the college’s Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs; and management of the student ambassadors, known as the COSAM Leaders. The ADAA is a member of the Dean’s Administrative Council and is expected to work closely with the dean and department chairs in realizing the strategic goals of the college. The ADAA also is a permanent member of the university Academic Affairs Committee, serves on other university committees that require an associate dean as part of its membership, and represents COSAM at various functions in the dean’s absence. Although this position is predominantly an administrative one, the associate dean will be expected to be regularly involved in a teaching and/or research program.

Successful applicants should hold tenure as a faculty member at Auburn University and have a record of interest, experience, and strong commitment to undergraduate students and programs. Previous administrative experience regarding curricular issues, undergraduate advising, and student affairs is desirable. Nominations are welcomed.

Application packages should include a curriculum vitae, a brief statement of qualifications and vision for leading the academic mission of the college, and the names and addresses (including e-mail) of three references. These documents should be compiled and submitted as a single PDF to Interim Dean Charles E. Savrda at savrdce@auburn.edu or mail it to 315 Roosevelt Concourse, Sciences Center Classrooms, room 248. Review of applications will begin Feb. 1, 2011. For additional information, contact Interim Dean Savrda at 4-5737 or savrdce@auburn.edu.
