Title: An Optimization Problem from High Energy Physics

Abstract: This talk is on a project for the Mathematical Sciences Graduate Internship (MSGI).  The project focuses on the color reconnections (CR) optimization problem from high energy physics (HEP). The optimization problem is to find the ground state energy of a system of particles from an accelerator event. We compare the problem to the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), and present a classical solution algorithm. We also demonstrate a Python program for implementing portions of the algorithm.
