Message from the Dean

There is a unique bond that exists between the College of Sciences and Mathematics and those individuals, past and present, that have been associated with us. This special connection generates a unity that is truly a manifestation of the wisdom that says, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

This is much like a chemical compound in which a collection of the diverse atoms come together and combine themselves into a unit that differs greatly from the properties of the individual atoms. This combined unity is the result of a connecting bridge known as a covalent bond in which the inter-atomic linkages result from the equal sharing of two or more electrons.

The COSAM experience is a lot like this bonding, or covalence. We work together to enhance the quality of the College of Sciences and Mathematics at Auburn University. Thus, it is scientifically, scholastically and socially fitting that the new COSAM electronic newsletter be named Covalence. It is an expression of the unique relationship we all share.

Tigers for Tigers: AU promotes tiger conservation.

Although rivals on the athletic field, several Tiger universities are joining forces to promote their mascot’s conservation in the wild. The Tigers for Tigers program originated at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1999 and now has an enthusiastic partner at Auburn University.

Auburn’s Hodge Receives Goldwater Scholarship:

Auburn University student Anne-Marie Hodge of Chattanooga, TN has been awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Hodge is a rising senior majoring in Zoology in the College of Sciences and Mathematics, in addition to pursuing a minor in Anthropology.

AU Explore: A FREE hands-on science event for kids!

“Ooooos” and “ahhhhs” could be heard echoing from the Auburn University Bibb Graves Amphitheater on Friday, April 25, as hundreds of elementary- and middle-school students gathered to watch a presentation on amphibians and reptiles given by the Herpetology Research Lab at Auburn University.

Remembering George Folkerts: COSAM loses beloved professor.

George W. Folkerts was born November 26, 1938, and died December 14, 2007, at his residence. He was a valued member of Trinity Lutheran Church and professor in the department of biological sciences at Auburn University for the past 38 years.

COSAM Hosts Dead Day Symposium:

On April 30, 2008 the College of Sciences and Mathematics hosted the sixth-annual Dead Day Symposium in the Sciences Center Auditorium. Leading scientists from around the country and Auburn University students, faculty and staff gathered to share and learn.
