Rural Medicine Program

Setting Out to Meet the Needs of Alabama’s Rural Communities

The Rural Medicine Program (RMP) is a jointly sponsored program between the University of Alabama School of Medicine (UASOM) and Auburn University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM). It is a “sister program” to the Rural Medical Scholars Program (RMSP), jointly sponsored by UASOM and the College of Community Health Sciences (CCHS) at the University of Alabama. Both programs are designed to increase the number of family-practice physicians serving rural Alabama. For additional information, please contact:

  • Interested students must complete the application found at
              www.uasom.uab.edu/secondaryapplication/RMSPMain.asp.
  • Take the MCAT as soon as possible
  • Possibility of conditional acceptance into the program based on ACT score
  • Minimum MCAT score 495 or higher. Minimum GPA 3.3 or higher.
  • Students who are selected will enter UASOM after 2 semesters on Auburn’s campus completing RMP
  • RMP is designed to increase student’s preparation (academically and in shadowing experiences)
  • Extensive, organized “shadowing” of rural physicians and other activities are required in RMP
  • Successful completion of RMP initiates entrance into UASOM for first 2 basic-science years at UAB 
  • Final 2 clinical years are completed at UASOM-Huntsville Regional Medical Campus
