Graduate Application for Geology
The Program
The M.S. degree program in geology is oriented towards providing the student with a sound practical background in geology through a series of required core courses with the opportunity for specialization through electives, thesis research and directed studies. Although faculty members and students are active in research, quality teaching is emphasized. The faculty attempts to maintain a close, informal relationship with students in all phases of their work. A low graduate student/faculty ratio (~2/1) makes this possible.
Degree Options and Requirements
Students may complete the M.S. program following either thesis or nonthesis options. The thesis option requires: (1) a minimum of 30 semester hours beyond the undergraduate degree, 21 of which must be graduate-level geology courses; and (2) satisfactory completion of a thesis chosen in conjunction with a faculty advisor. The nonthesis option, intended for nontraditional students, requires: (1) a minimum of 40 semester hours, at least 27 of which must be graduate-level geology courses; and (2) satisfactory completion of a "capstone" experience under faculty guidance.
Both degree options require (1) satisfactory completion of a summer field course or comparable field experience prior to beginning the second year of residence and (2) demonstrated working knowledge of a computer language or computer-based geographic information system (G.I.S.) before graduation.
Financial Assistance
Teaching assistantships (nine-month appointment), which currently carry a stipend of ~$1,414 and a complete tuition waiver, are now competitively available to qualified applicants. Research assistantships, which carry a comparable stipend and an out-of-state tuition waiver, also may be available depending on current faculty grants. In awarding assistantships, preference is given to applicants who pursue the thesis option.
Entrance Requirements
Admission to the M.S. program requires a bachelor's degree in Geology or related Earth Science discipline. In addition, an acceptable undergraduate grade-point average, satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE; aptitude only), and three supporting letters of recommendation are required.
Application Procedure
Applications for admission can be obtained from the Department of Geology and Geography or the Auburn University Graduate School (see below). Applications, plus GRE scores and two official undergraduate transcripts from all colleges attended, must be submitted directly to the Graduate School at least four weeks prior to the start of the semester in which the student desires to enroll (preferably by February 15 if financial assistance is requested). Three supporting letters of recommendation should be sent directly to the Department of Geology and Geography.
