I enjoy fiction of various types. I recently read Bernard Cornwell's "The Saxon Stories," a series set in 9th century England (with the next book coming out soon!). His Sharpe books (a series set in the 1800s in Europe and dealing with Britain's war with France under Napoleon) were also excellent and were made into a great 14 show British TV series that was aired in the U.S. by PBS. The books and DVD's of the show are available on Amazon.com. Bernard Cornwell's website is http://www.bernardcornwell.net/

Quote
"No Geologist worth anything is permanently bound to a desk or laboratory, but the charming notion that true science can only be based on unbiased observation of nature in the raw is mythology. Creative work, in geology and anywhere else, is interaction and synthesis: half-baked ideas from a bar room, rocks in the field, chains of thought from lonely walks, numbers squeezed from rocks in a laboratory, numbers from a caculator riveted to a desk, fancy equipment usually malfunctioning on expensive ships, cheap equipment in the human cranium, arguments before a road cut" - Stephen Jay Gould, An Urchin in the Storm (1988)

Periodic Table Videos - Whoever said chemistry has to be boring? This site, which examines the periodic table of elements, attempts to make it a bit more interesting. It's made up of videos, mostly under 5 minutes in length, put together by the chemistry department of the University of Nottingham, in which they tell something about the history of the elements (all 118 of them), their properties, and how they're used. It's an interesting way of looking at science, even for the non-geeks among us.
