Wildlife Interaction
While developing a collection of
native Alabama habitats, we have created homes for numerous species of other creatures.
More than 30 species of reptiles and amphibians, and even more
birds have been documented. Seven fish species and eight mammals have been recorded. The pond and wetlands are hotspots for wildlife observation. River cooters
and yellow-bellied and red-eared pond slider turtles eagerly swarm to patrons who offer them breadcrumbs and catfish pellets. You may even catch a glimpse of our large spiny softshell or common snapping turtles.
Beyond the vertebrates, there are many species of invertebrates, fungi and other living creatures. Since the Arboretum does not use fungicides or insecticides, our diversity in these groups is exceptional. Your chances of seeing individuals are guaranteed if conditions are right. To truly appreciate the diversity of species present, be sure to visit the Arboretum.
