Katie Marlow, originally from Harvest, Alabama, will carry the flag representing the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) at the Fall 2023 commencement ceremony. For Marlow, who has always loved genetics, this degree is another chapter in her exciting journey to become a genetics professor.

“There is so much we don’t understand in genetics,” she said. “It is the code to life, and it impacts every living thing.”

Marlow, who is earning her bachelor’s degree with a major in genetics and a minor in business, enjoys both teaching and research.

“I want to dive deep into studying cancer genetics and different drug interactions,” she added. “Genetics is applicable to so many important areas such as agriculture, personalized medicine, manufacturing and many other industries.”

Marlow loves to inspire others to learn about science.

“I am the vice president of Tri Beta, a biological honor society, and I work with COSAM STEM Outreach to increase the awareness of science in the local community,” she explained.

She also was a founding member and president of Auburn’s Genetics Club. Marlow participated in many other activities including Microbiology Club, Auburn Biotechnology Society, Honors Congress and the Honors College. She was actively involved in undergraduate research in the Department of Drug Discovery and Development and worked in the Auburn University Learning Assistant Program for Microbiology courses.

She will begin working on her master’s degree in Jan. 2024. Afterwards, she plans on earning her doctorate degree in genetics.

“My family has been supportive and my older sister, Julia who has a degree in biology, is my number one source for encouragement,” she shared.

When she is not working on science, Marlow enjoys baking and even prepared the desserts for her family’s Thanksgiving dinner.
