Candace Jones, a biomedical sciences major, will represent the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) and carry the flag into commencement on Saturday, Aug. 5. However, her Auburn story ends with her walking across the stage at the Neville Arena while the very person who believed in her the most will not physically be in attendance.

As a freshman her Auburn story was just beginning, and the first chapter began with immense tragedy.

Jones lost her father.

“My dad was my biggest supporter,” she said.

When she earned straight As, Jones was sure that her dad was there though.

“I knew my dad was proud of me; I felt his presence,” she explained.

His spirit kept her going.

Jones will be attending optometry school next year to fulfil her dream of becoming an optometrist.

“Ever since I was five years old and I got my first pair of glasses, I knew I wanted to be an optometrist,” Jones said.

She has a relentless passion to give back to underserved communities where children may not normally go see an eye doctor.

“When I was in school, there were other students that would squint to see the board, but they just didn’t go to an optometrist,” she said. “I want to help children see the world and know that they can succeed in school.”

A native of North Huntsville, Jones first told her family that she had been selected as the COSAM Graduation Marshal.

Her dedication to earning her bachelor’s degree has helped her grow and develop during her time in COSAM.

“I learned critical thinking skills, time management skills and overall professionalism that will help me excel in optometry school,” she explained.

She has heartfelt advice for COSAM students.

“Remember that you were accepted to Auburn University for a reason,” said Jones. “Take advantage of the resources the university offers to help you succeed. Go to office hours. Talk to learning assistants. Be engaged and ask questions.”

Jones is excited to celebrate commencement and her dad’s spirit will continue to keep her going.

Not only is her entire family proud that she is graduating, but she is beginning a new chapter as an optometrist, giving back to people in her hometown and making a difference in the lives of others.

And she will continue to make her dad, her family and COSAM proud.
