Davis Arthur received awards including the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) Outstanding Sophomore Award and the Department of Physics Sophomore Award. This 4.0 physics major will be spending his summer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee learning about quantum key distribution to encrypt and secure data transmissions.

“This summer I will be working on a project focused on improving the security of the cyber and communication systems supporting U.S. Department of Energy infrastructure,” Davis explained. “Under the leadership of my mentor Dr. Nicholas Peters, I will work to explore the possibilities and challenges of deploying quantum key distribution in our current infrastructure.”

Davis will gain hands-on experience working in a leading facility, which is the largest science and energy laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy.

“I am excited to learn more about encryption and quantum computing, so the opportunity over the summer should be an incredible learning experience,” he added.

At COSAM, Davis is a tutor for both Physics I and Physics II in addition to working on research on optical physics in Dr. Guillaume Marc Laurent’s Auburn Source of Attosecond Pulses Laboratory.

“My experiences solving problems alongside classmates in Physics I and Physics II are some of my favorite college memories, and they helped guide my path towards research and involvement in the Department of Physics,” Davis said.

After his internship, he will be returning this fall to Auburn University and has been selected as a COSAM Research Ambassador. He will be able to help other students learn about research opportunities and share his personal insight with his peers.

“Academics are a top priority of mine, and COSAM has always helped guide my passion for learning,” Davis shared. “My personal development through COSAM has not only benefitted myself, but has also made a positive impact on the college.”
