Auburn freshman follows dentistry passion through COSAM
Meredith Forrester has always enjoyed going to the dentist. Growing up, her dentists were family friends who made the experience personable and exciting. When she received braces as a teenager, she truly fell in love with dentistry and orthodontics.
“I so deeply enjoyed going to the orthodontist that I began to shadow and actively pursue knowledge about dentistry,” Forrester shared. “Every experience in the field has been rewarding and assurance of my love for dental care.”
Originally from Arab, Ala., Forrester recently started her college career as a biomedical sciences student with a pre-dental concentration through the Auburn University College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM). She is a recipient of the Spirit of Auburn Presidential Scholarship and plans to pursue a career as an orthodontist.
Forrester first discovered an interest in science in eighth grade. Her physical science teacher used to give her students the materials for experiments without a detailed procedure.
“The arduous task of putting puzzle pieces together to discover the purpose of the experiment often taught me more than what I actually learned in the experiment,” she said.
Forrester decided to pursue her science studies at Auburn University because she believes it provides the perfect balance of social and athletic vibrancy, while offering a rigorous pre-health education.
“As several family members have attended Auburn in the past, I was familiar with the school,” she said. “After attending multiple tours I was certain that I wanted to attend Auburn, not only because of the excitement of an SEC school, but also because of how much Auburn emphasizes community and academic excellence.”
She said she is most looking forward to being an involved member of pre-health organization Alpha Epsilon Delta and has enjoyed the beginning of her first semester in COSAM.
“I have been most impressed with COSAM through my Pre-Health Orientation class,” Forrester shared. “My professor, Katy Crider, has done an excellent job in the last two weeks to demonstrate all the resources that COSAM has to offer.”
