Music Collections: Rock, Pop, and Adult Contemporary
Blues, classic, country, folk, funk, pop, progressive, and other types of rock all seemed tied to various other styles. Is Bonnie Ratt blues, country, rock, or some other category? What about Jennifer Lopez - - is her music Latin or pop or both? From Chuck Berry to Aerosmith, the definition of rock has evolved and expanded over the past 50 years.
Adult Contemporary. What happens to old rockers? They become adult contemporary. James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and Bruce Springsteen are a few that have bridged rock and adult contemporary music. A wide range of singers and songwriters fall into this category. Does Cher go in adult contemporary or will she always be pop rock? Soft rock artists like Linda Ronstadt and Carly Simon are now in this category.
Alternative Rock. Elvis Costello, U2, Beck, Nirvana, Counting Crows, and Alanis Morissette are all well-known alternative rock artists. Within alternative you find a wide range of areas including Alternative Country, Funk and Rap Rock, and Indie Rock. New Wave groups include Depeche Mode and the Ramones.
Classic Rock. Do you remember Elvis, Bob Dylan, or the British Invasion? Maybe The Who, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart, and Elton John are closer to your generation. How about Eagles, Kansas, Boston, Journey, and Styx? Regardless of whether or not you're a 'baby boomer', everyone seems to love classic rock. Compilation CDs have become very popular including works by decade or group.
Hard Rock & Metal. Britsh metal, death metal, grunge, hard rock, and many other hard rock variations have been made popular by groups such as Cream, Foo Fighters, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, AC/DC, and ZZ Top.
Popular Rock. Popular artists include Prince, Pearl Jam, Eric Clapton, and Sheryl Crow.
Teen Pop. Teens seem to have a world of their own in music. Heart throbs seem to come and go as they reach maturity. Christina Agilera, Brittney Spears, and NSYNC are examples.
