Greetings!

Welcome to Auburn University’s graduate program in history! With special strengths in U.S. history, Southern history, history of technology, and public history, as well as in women, gender, and sexuality, we are a comprehensive, regional leader in graduate history education. Our department offers three graduate degrees (Ph.D., M.A., and Certificate in Public History). For more on the requirements for completing each track, click here.

At Auburn students work closely with faculty in the classroom and out in the world. We view graduate education as an opportunity to mentor aspiring historians as teachers, researchers, and scholars. As such, the department provides graduate students training in classroom teaching and a range of opportunities to work on public history projects with various institutions and community partners. Graduate students can expect close mentorship and a collaborative, generative, and supportive environment. In general, Ph.D. students are fully funded for five years, and MA students are fully funded for two years.

Our graduates go on to careers as professors, public historians, government employees, educators, and archivists.

We recommend prospective graduate students start with our introduction to graduate school.
