COSAM - Geosciences Department
Description: As wildfires burn, they produce ash and organic compounds that can be preserved in geological records like lakes, peats, and the ocean. By extracting these combustion by-products from sediment records, we can reconstruct wildfires of the past. By comparing wildfire histories with climate changes and shifts in vegetation, these fire records can offer helpful insights into the present and future. We are looking for students who will use microscopes and a variety of general lab and geological techniques.
