Shotokan Testing

The requirements listed below are only meant to be a guide and an indication of a typical Kyu test. At the Sensei's discretion you may be asked to perform any excercise or technique you have been shown.

Belt Test
8th Kyu (Yellow Belt)

Kata: Heian Shodan Diagram 1

  Forward Chudan Oi-zuki Stepping in Middle level stepping punch

  Backward Shoto-uke in Kokutsu-dachi Step Back Knife-hand block in back stance
  Forward Mae-geri Step In Front snap kick
  Sideward Yoko-geri kekomi Side thrust kick

Kumite: Sanbon kumite. Three step sparring. 2 trips up and back attacking face; 1st time, defender counter attacks with a hand technique only; 2nd time, counter attacks with a kick and a hand technique combination. Finally, 1 trip attacking to stomach with any counter technique allowed.

7th Kyu (Orange Belt)

4th Kyu (Purple Belt)

Kumite: Jyu ippon kumite. Semi free sparring. Both attacker and defender assume free-style stance; attacks are the same as in those in one step sparring. Attacker may ( and should) move around to help create attacking opportunities.
