Students Honored with International Scholarships, Grants
Caroline Louise Gierke, a College of Business student majoring in International Business, received a grant from the French Minister of Foreign Affairs and the French Consulate in Atlanta to attend the 62nd Annual Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France. She was one of thirteen students from all areas of the globe to receive this prestigious grant. As part of this grant she attended six red carpet film premiers and had access to professional networking parties such as the Canadian Film Society's networking party in the International Market of the Cannes Film Festival. And, she will be writing an article about her experience, in French, and have it published in a national journal for French university professors. Next semester, Caroline will be studying at ESDES-Universite Catholique de Lyon and then interning with the couture designer Emanuel Ungaro in Paris for the summer of 2010.

Secondly, Will Docimo has been awarded a $500 scholarship from Cultural Experiences Abroad (CEA) and will study in Aix-en-Provence, France, during the spring of 2010. CEA gives out several semester scholarships annually.

Supported in part by National Geographic Society, the Glimpse Correspondents Program provides talented young writers and photographers (between the ages of 18-34) with a $600 stipend, guaranteed publication on Glimpse.org, professional training and support, and possible publication in National Geographic platforms.

OIE Staff Visits Atlanta Immigration Authorities
The AU staff of International Student and Scholar Services recently visited with key immigration authorities in Atlanta, providing staff in the Office of International Education a better appreciation of the perspectives and procedures of key organizations in the Department of Homeland Security. The tour was organized by officials of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.  Auburn personnel visited the immigration services and facilities at the Atlanta airport and viewed a naturalization ceremony at the USCIS where nearly 200 immigrants became U.S. citizens.

Reminder for International Students & Scholars - “Gold Forms"
International students must be registered for a full course load or be "out of status." For graduate students a full course load is 9 hours and for undergraduate students it is 12 hours. There are specific occasions, however, when students may legitimately fall below a full course load. This requires the submission of a Full Course of Study Form ("Gold Form") to the Office of International Education. Federal regulations require that "the DSO must update SEVIS prior to the student reducing his or her course load." Therefore, the OIE deadline for Spring semester Gold Forms will be November 20. Anyone turning in a Gold Form after this date will run the risk of not being current in SEVIS by the start of classes on January 11, the federally mandated cutoff date. The OIE will not accept a Gold Form for permission to drop below a full course load after the first day of classes, without a valid medical excuse.
