What is a NAACLS accredited clinical internship?

National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited internships are 12-months long and can be hospital-based or University-based. The internship is comprised of lectures and laboratory rotations in the following areas:

Blood Banking(Immunohematology)

Clinical Chemistry

Toxicology

Management

Quality Control/Quality Assurance

Urinalysis/Body Fluids

Hematology/Coagulation

Immunology/Serology

Mycology

Microbiology

Parasitology

Molecular Diagnostics

Accuracy, precision, and testing theory for each blood parameter and the respective physiological status is discussed in lecture. Actual patient specimens are used for instruction during the internship. Interns spend time on the bench learning directly from MLS mentors as patient samples are being processed. By the end of their department rotation, the intern should be capable of performing the respective analyses independently.

Each student must gain acceptance to clinical internship prior to attending.
