Retirement is an exciting milestone, and a little preparation can help make the transition as smooth as possible. About three months before your planned retirement date, begin the steps below to ensure your retirement paperwork and benefits are completed on time.
Getting Started
- Submit a letter of resignation to your department.
- Ask your department to initiate your retirement Electronic Personnel Action Form (EPAF).
- Email benefit@auburn.edu to schedule a retirement appointment with Human Resources.
Your Retirement Appointment
During your appointment, a Human Resources representative will walk you through the retirement process and provide the forms and information you need, including:
- Your retirement application
- Direct deposit forms
- Auburn University's health insurance cancellation form
- Information about enrolling in the Public Education Employees' Health Insurance Plan (PEEHIP)
- A review of your retirement benefits and available options
After Your Appointment
Once your appointment is complete, submit your retirement application to the Teachers' Retirement System of Alabama (TRS). TRS will send you additional retirement documents, including benefit option information and tax forms. Be sure to complete and return all required forms to TRS before your retirement date.
PEEHIP will also mail enrollment information for medical coverage and any optional benefits available to retirees.
If you were enrolled in Auburn University's health insurance immediately before retirement, please bring your completed PEEHIP enrollment form to Human Resources. We will certify your continuous coverage, which allows you to avoid PEEHIP's 270-day waiting period for preexisting conditions.
