Preparing for retirement involves several important steps and deadlines. About three months before your retirement date, use the information below to help ensure a smooth transition from active employment to retirement.

  • Write a letter of resignation to your department.
  • Ask your department to submit your retirement Electronic Personnel Action Form (EPAF).
  • E-mail benefit@auburn.edu to schedule an appointment.

During your appointment, Human Resources will provide:

  • A retirement application
  • A direct deposit form
  • Auburn University's health insurance cancellation form (you will enroll in the Public Education Employees' Health Insurance Plan, or PEEHIP)
  • A review of your benefits

After your appointment, submit your retirement application to the Teachers' Retirement System (TRS). TRS will then send you a retirement benefit option selection packet and tax forms. Complete and return these forms to TRS before your retirement date.

The PEEHIP office will also send you enrollment materials for health insurance and optional coverage. If you were enrolled in Auburn University's health insurance immediately before retirement, bring the completed PEEHIP enrollment form to Human Resources for certification of your continuous coverage. This certification eliminates the 270-day waiting period for preexisting conditions under PEEHIP.
