FAQs
How are employees entered into TigerTime?
Employees are automatically imported into TigerTime when they are added to Banner. Updates are received nightly. For example, if you are added to Banner on a Monday afternoon, your information should be available in TigerTime by Tuesday morning.
How do you enter time in TigerTime?
- Card-swipe terminals – swipe your Auburn University Banner ID card at a smart terminal
- Web-enabled timestamp – log in to a TigerTime URL using your AU GID and password
How is time sent to Banner?
A custom payroll interface extracts timecard data and creates a comma-delimited text file, which is then imported into Banner.
What about holidays?
Holidays are added to the system as soon as the holiday schedule is published. If you are eligible for holiday pay, TigerTime is configured to pay a set number of hours based on your FTE. If you work on a holiday, your punches are captured as separate line items.
Working on a holiday does not automatically result in overtime pay. Overtime is calculated on a weekly—not daily—basis. You must work more than 40 hours in a workweek before overtime is calculated.
Holiday hours will not appear on your timecard until the current pay period.
If you are a part-time, leave-eligible employee, holidays are not automatically added to your timecard. Your manager or designated timekeeper must enter PTB hours based on your work schedule.
What if I’m late or leave early?
Attendance issues, such as arriving late or leaving early, are managed at the departmental level and should be discussed with your supervisor. Payroll’s primary responsibility is ensuring all employees are paid accurately and on time.
For full-time, non-exempt employees, a total of 80 hours per pay period (40 hours per week) is generally expected.
Why does payroll require 40 hours per week for full-time biweekly employees?
Vacation and sick leave accrue based on a 40-hour workweek. If you report fewer than 40 hours in a week, your leave accruals may be reduced.
Salaried, non-exempt employees are paid across 26 pay periods per year based on a 40-hour workweek. If fewer than 40 hours are reported, pay may be reduced accordingly.
Can my supervisor change my time if I’m late or leave early?
While supervisors can edit timecards, all changes are recorded in TigerTime’s detailed audit trail. Modifying time worked inappropriately is unethical and may result in disciplinary action.
What is the difference between accrual balances in TigerTime and Banner?
Leave balances in TigerTime are typically more up to date than those in Banner; however, Banner is the official system of record.
You can view your leave balances at any terminal. Balances are refreshed approximately every four hours.
If Auburn uses electronic timekeeping, do I still need to submit paper leave slips or timecards?
No. If you are leave eligible, you will request leave directly through TigerTime. Your request is routed to your supervisor for approval or denial. Approved leave is automatically added to your timecard.
Paper timecards are also no longer required. All time and leave records are maintained electronically.
Who uses TigerTime?
All employees paid by Auburn University use TigerTime, including employees of:
- Auburn University
- Auburn University at Montgomery
- Alabama Cooperative Extension System
- Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station
I don’t work on campus. How do I report time?
If you work off campus and do not have access to a computer or timekeeping terminal, you may report your time to your supervisor or timekeeper, who can enter punches on your behalf.
My department discourages overtime, and I sometimes don’t report hours worked over 40. What should I do?
You are required to report all hours worked. For example, if you are required to work an after-hours event, those hours must be included in your weekly total.
Auburn University policy requires overtime to be approved in advance. However, under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the university must compensate you for all hours worked.
Departments may choose to compensate overtime through pay or by allowing you to adjust your schedule later in the week, when appropriate.
If overtime is worked without prior approval, Auburn University is still required to compensate you for the time worked. However, your department may apply disciplinary action for failure to follow approval procedures.
My department allows flexible schedules. How does TigerTime handle this?
TigerTime supports flexible scheduling by allowing departments to create customized shifts and schedules.
Why are only non-exempt employees required to clock in and out?
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires Auburn University to track time worked for all non-exempt (hourly) employees.
Who needs to swipe in and out each day?
If you are a non-exempt employee, you are required to swipe in and out each day for payroll purposes.
How do non-exempt employees swipe in and out?
You can swipe in and out using smart terminals located near your work area or by clocking in and out through a computer-based timestamp.
How do I know my swipe was accepted?
When you swipe successfully, the time clock or smart terminal provides visual and auditory confirmation, typically a green light and a beep.
What happens if I forget to clock in or out?
If you forget to clock in or out, notify your supervisor as soon as possible. Your supervisor can insert the missing time on your timecard.
I’m required to attend off-site training. How should I handle clocking in and out?
Off-site training is typically prescheduled and approved in advance by your supervisor. In these cases, your supervisor or manager will update your timecard to reflect the approved training time.
What if I leave during the day and return later?
You should swipe in and out each time you leave and return. For example, if you leave once and return once during the day (such as for lunch), your timecard will show four entries.
What happens if there is a power failure?
Time clocks are equipped with battery backups that store punches during a power outage. Once power is restored, all saved punches are uploaded to the TigerTime system.
Can I clock in from any smart terminal on campus?
Yes, you may clock in from any smart terminal on campus, with some exceptions for employees who use biometric timekeeping.
Can I clock in using both my computer and a smart terminal?
Yes. Full-time employees may clock in using either a computer or a smart terminal. Student employees are typically restricted to smart terminals. Many employees prefer smart terminals because they are quick and easy to use.
How does TigerTime work?
TigerTime is a web-based time and attendance system that helps Auburn University collect hours worked and calculate employee pay. The system provides multiple access points for you and your supervisor.
What happens if TigerTime is unavailable?
TigerTime is supported by multiple backup and redundant systems to minimize outages. If the system were ever unavailable, Payroll has procedures in place to ensure you are paid accurately and on time.
Can I print my timecard from a time clock?
No. While you can review your hours worked directly at a time clock, time cards cannot be printed from the device. If you need a printed copy, your supervisor can generate one for you.
Can supervisors review employee time?
Yes. Supervisors have access to employee timecards and are encouraged to review them regularly to ensure accuracy.
Can the time clock be connected to other devices, such as a fax machine?
No. TigerTime time clocks operate as part of a stand-alone system and are not connected to other devices.
How is my time calculated in TigerTime?
All punch times are rounded to the nearest quarter hour using a standard “7-minute rule.” Time may be rounded forward or backward.
For example, if you clock in at 8:07 a.m., your time is rounded back to 8:00 a.m. If you clock in at 8:08 a.m., your time is rounded forward to 8:15 a.m.

Do supervisors approve employee timecards?
Yes. Your supervisor reviews and approves your reported time in TigerTime using an electronic signature.
Where are smart terminals (time clocks) located?
Smart terminals are located in convenient areas across campus. Buildings with high employee traffic may have multiple terminals. A map showing terminal locations is available on the TigerTime website.
Can I request leave in advance using TigerTime?
Yes. You can request leave in advance through TigerTime. Once your supervisor approves the request, the leave automatically appears on your timecard. Time is not sent to Banner until the current pay period. If your request exceeds your available leave balance, the system will notify you immediately.
