Temperature difference at junctions produces voltage difference (Seebeck effect). Output weak.

5E50.16 Thermoelectric Motor

Operates on the basis of the Seebeck effect. One leg of the device is put in a cup of hot water. The other leg is placed in a cup of cold water. The temperature difference reults in an electric current being produced through the Seebeck effect. If the temperature difference is large enough the small electric motor will turn the disc. Version may differ from that in picture.

Setup Requirements: Time needed to heat water and get ice. Test in stock room to make sure working. May have to give disc a push to get started. You will need to use hotplate in classroom to heat water if not done at start of class. 

Equations: V = (S(A) -S(B)) x (T(2) - T(1))  where S refers to Seebeck coefficients of metals A and B.

5E40.25 Fruit or Vegetable Powered Clock

Lemon, Apple, or Potato battery operates digital clock. Operation requires two types of metal for electrodes. Metals plus chemicals form Voltaic cell.

Setup Requirements: Assembled as needed. Voltmeter can be added. 2 day advance notice needed or bring your own vegetable or fruit. Requires 2 apples or other fruit or vegetable. Also works with Coke or Pepsi on each side.

5E50.30 Thermoelectric magnet

Put one plate over a flame and the other plate in water. Magnet can hold up to about 10kg.
