5F10.10 Ohm's law

Measure current and voltage in a simple circuit. Change the voltage or resistance. Display meter available.

Setup Requirements: Assembled as needed

Equations: V = IR

Safety Issues: None

5F20.10 Kirchoff's Voltage Law

Measure the voltages around a three resistor and battery circuit. Show sum of voltage drops equals battery voltage. Version provided may differ from than shown depending on avilability of demonstration meters.

Setup Requirements: Assembled as needed.

Equations: Sum of EMFs = Sum of IR drops

Safety Issues: None

5F20.50 Series and Parallel Light Bulbs

A light bulb board with switches allows configuration of several combinations of series and parallel lamps. A safer but dimmer version using light bulbs and batteries is also available. If your request does not specify version, you will be given the 120v version.

Setup Requirements: Off the shelf for 120v version, some assembly needed for 6v version.

Equations: Bulbs in parallel will have same voltage. Bulbs in series have same current. Bulbs in series will share voltage according to wattage. Low wattage bulb has higher resistance.

Safety Issues: Possible shock. 120v present on bare wires.

5F30.10 Light Bulb and Capacitor

Connect a large electrolytic capacitor, battery and flashlight bulb in series. Observe that bulb gets dimmer as capacitor charges up. Meters to show voltage optional.

Setup Requirements: Assembled as needed. Meters available to measure capacitor and bulb voltage and to measure current. Ask ahead of time if you want meters.

Equations: time constant= RC

Safety Issues: Capacitor remains charged for long time.

5F30.20 RC or LR Curve on Scope

An oscilloscope is available to show exponential charging or discharging curve. Also can be used with inductor instead of capacitor.

Setup Requirements: At least one day advance notice needed to assemble and test.

Equations: Time constant = RC or L/R

Safety Issues: AC voltage present .
