ENGL 4710: Popular Genres: The Romance (2010)

  • Dr. Backscheider was a pleasure to work with. She was always encouraging and willing to talk! To me, the 1-day-a-week set up was ideal.
  • She was very helpful and thorough. I had no doubt that she knew what she was talking about, and made a 2.5 hour class fly by.
  • Amazing as always, enough said. I love the 2.5 hour class. I felt like it was much more effective than a 50 minute class. Caution though, I do not have faith that every professor could maintain the level of interest this class had.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed this class. I was fully confident in Dr. Backscheider’s knowledge of the material. I liked that the class was 2.5 hours long. It worked well for discussion.
  • She is a very effective discussion leader, which is challenging in a 2.5 hour class. I honestly was not bored in class any week. She is intellectually stimulating and holds students to individual standards. Very reasonable reading load. Weekly writings could have been a little more extensive. Group work fun. Papers stimulating.
  • Great course! Don’t change anything, it was very effective. You obviously know what you’re doing. I liked the Regis book as a textbook.
  • She was very effective as a discussion leader. She was good at changing up the class sessions so you never really knew what was coming. While some classes were more interesting than others, it was never boring. Didn’t care for the first presentations (the Valentines ones). Didn’t particularly enjoy the 2.5 hour class as far as sitting through a class that long, but I liked that we had that long for discussion & could talk about an entire book.
  • Very good, but rather patronizing at times. Really liked having a 2.5 hour class, especially with the transportation issues, parking, etc. You only have to go once. Some assignments seemed like busy work—like papers which accompanied presentations. Also, more detailed prompts would help. 12-15 pages on a prompt that is not a complete sentence is difficult.
  • I loved Dr. Backscheider. She brought so much experience and knowledge into class discussion. This was the best English class I have ever taken. She is reasonable and fair. The reading material was fair and varied. Monday class only was tedious at times but overall I liked it more than MWF classes.
  • I can easily say that Dr. Backscheider is the best professor I’ve encountered at Auburn, as well as my education before Auburn. She never fails to be remarkably enthusiastic and is one of the most intelligent, yet humble, people I’ve ever met. This is my second class I’ve had the privilege to take with her, & I genuinely hope it is not my last. She encourages students in a way I’ve never seen before, & I appreciate her dedication to her students.
  • Dr. Backscheider is a very effective teacher. Her use of class time and leadership abilities are unrivaled. Lets face it, making a 2.5 hour class fun is not easy; she succeeded.
  • Backscheider is an extremely capable and effective instructor. Highly recommended. Loved the 2.5 hour course setup. Group projects were fun and the reading material was great. One of the best classes, if not the best, I’ve taken at Auburn.
  • Wonderful!! She inspired us all to really delve into the material & analyze it. The class was fun, interesting, and applicable to our own lives. She really helped develop my analytical skills & gave me confidence to speak up in class, something I don’t normally do! She was great, I can’t say enough good things. I was told that I needed to take her before I left Auburn & they were right, she opened my eyes to the world I live in. I loved the 2.5 hour class, I thought it really improved discussion & our interest in the books. I felt that the 2.5 hours really let us delve into the books we read & develop ideas we wouldn’t have been able to in 50 min. I appreciated the major paper being early in the course. I loved how we delved into all aspects of popular culture and not just literary fiction.
  • I loved this class! It’s one of my favorite classes I have taken in college. One suggestion would be to read more genres in romance like one “erotic” romance. One that’s not too nasty—and maybe a paranormal romance book too. Overall—absolutely loved class & instructor.
  • Very good at teaching the material. However, questions tended to be misleading. The organization of the course was good, though I believe a look at other mediums besides novels would be useful.
  • PB was extremely effective in this class. She has extensive knowledge of the romance genre and all the aspects of it. Her discussions were great. It was an EXCELLENT CLASS! She’s so enthusiastic and encouraging that we all wanted to participate. Yay PB! I liked the 2.5 hour format. I wish we could have come everyday though because it was so fun and INTERESTING! The material we read was great, it provided great discussion.
  • Dr. Backscheider is an excellent person. She is genuinely invested in both her students’ education and the general advancement of truth in the universe. She cares and she is smart as heck. Win-win.
  • Simply brilliant! Not only is Dr. B incredibly intelligent, but she is very present during class. She doesn’t ask us what we think just to correct us—she’s fascinated by our opinions & thoughts. Hands down best teacher I’ve ever had at Auburn AND in general. Dr. B exhibits a genuine interest and concern for her students & that makes class amazing! Class is challenging & insightful—never a bore! Fascinating class! Most interesting 2.5 hours of my week. Time flies w/Dr. B & romance novels. Good schedule—only meet once a week, but that gives us a whole week to prepare for the next riveting class discussion! Loved everything about this class—esp. Dr. Backscheider!
  • Dr. Backscheider is one of my favorite professors—she is extremely knowledgeable in the subject & always encourages student discussion. I loved the course—romance was such a cool genre to cover.
  • Incredibly encouraging professor. Good discussion. Interesting topic! A three hour class around dinner/lunch time was difficult. But I liked once a week.
  • Dr. Backscheider was an excellent teacher and I enjoyed this course. I enjoyed the format of the class and the fact that we only met once a week.
  • Dr. Backscheider is an excellent professor. No further comments. Would be interesting to do a survey class of popular genres in general, i.e. horror, detective, etc.
  • Very effective, great discussion, great concern for students, really cares about their success.
  • She was excellent. I’m torn about the 2.5 hour class. Not conducive for eating, but I suppose that’s because I’m in class from 8-4:30.
  • Love the discussion format in class, & LOVE only having one day a week for 2.5 hours! Great set up! Keep it exactly the same!!
