When nanoflakes meet epitaxial thin films

When nanoflakes meet epitaxial thin films

In the project “Studying magnetoelectric coupling in van der Waals/oxide thin film heterostructures”, the Auburn Physics team led by Wencan Jin proposes to build a new type of composite system based on van der Waals materials and oxide thin films. This project has recently been funded by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research as part of the $18 million Defense Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (DEPSCoR), among 28 collaborative research teams across the country.

Auburn University will host Mathematical Methods for Novel Metamaterials in 2024 through NSF grant

Auburn University will host Mathematical Methods for Novel Metamaterials in 2024 through NSF grant

Junshan Lin, the C. Harry Knowles Endowed Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and Primary Investigator, and Yanzhao Cao, the Don Logan Endowed Chair of Mathematics, professor, Graduate Program Officer, and associate chair and the co-PI of this award, are the recipient of a $38,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to help bring a Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS) to Auburn University.

“Metamaterials are artificial composite structures that exhibit unusual material properties not found in nature. The field has attracted enormous research interest in the past two decades, thanks to the unprecedented experimental ability to engineer the complex composite structures. The significant applications of novel metamaterials have driven the need for mathematical analysis of the underlying mathematical models to understand new physics phenomena and efficient computational modeling techniques to guide realistic applications. This CBMS conference seeks to disseminate the most recent research development in mathematical methods for optical metamaterials, train new generation of researchers in the field, and chart future directions for this important interdisciplinary research,” said Lin.
