Mark Liles appointed COSAM’s Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies

Mark Liles, the acting associate dean of research and graduate studies in COSAM, has been appointed to the permanent position. Since August 2021, Liles has been in a transitional role. As of May 1, 2023, Liles will officially be the associate dean for research and graduate studies.

 

“During my time in this position as acting associate dean, I have had a chance to work with outstanding COSAM faculty, students and staff who work diligently and all contribute to helping our college develop new frontiers in research that has global impact,” said Liles. “I am genuinely excited about being able to support Dean Thomas’ bold vision for COSAM and help the next generation of faculty and students grow and flourish as they conduct cutting-edge research and contribute to society in so many ways including as scientists, educators and entrepreneurs.”

COSAM Graduation Marshal seeks to make a difference as a doctor with a passion for microbiology

Ashtyn Phillippi, a native of Lafayette, Louisiana, was born with a heart defect that inspired her to pursue a career as a physician to give back to others. Phillippi will carry the flag for COSAM into the commencement ceremony as the college’s Graduation Marshal. She graduates with her bachelor's degree with a major in microbiology and is attending LSU Shreveport School of Medicine in the fall.

 

“I really enjoyed my time at Auburn University,” Phillippi said. “In my microbiology courses, I was able to apply what I learned to directly identify the correct bacteria. It was rewarding to be able to use your coursework to help you further your knowledge.”

COSAM undergraduate student receives Young Botanist Award: Certificate of Special Achievement from Botanical Society of America

Noah Yawn has been recognized by the Botanical Society of America (BSA), the nation’s major botanical professional organization founded in 1893. In April the BSA selected Yawn as a recipient of a 2023 Certificate of Special Achievement. This highest award of the society’s Young Botanist Awards is awarded to the top 25 graduating seniors from a pool nominated by faculty members from across the country. Yawn will be graduating in May 2023 with concurrent degrees in Integrative Biology and Geology–Earth System Science.
