Eight Auburn University students, graduates receive National Science Foundation fellowships

Eight current or former Auburn University students have won this year’s National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships, a program designed to help ensure the vitality and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce in the United States.

Each fellowship consists of three years of support accessible over a five-year period. For each year, the NSF provides a stipend of $34,000 to the fellow and a cost-of-education allowance of $12,000 to the degree-granting institution.

“That Auburn University students continue to receive these highly prestigious fellowships is a testament to the pathbreaking science and engineering research happening on our campus,” said Tiffany Sippial, director of Auburn’s Honors College. “These eight awardees are richly deserving of this recognition for their extraordinary work.”

Biological Sciences graduate programs honored at provost's Excellence in Assessment reception

Each year, academic programs across campus submit an annual assessment report that is peer-reviewed in a meta-assessment institute. All assessment reports are scored using a quality of assessment rubric, which rates elements of program assessment on a scale from beginning to exemplary. Programs who receive an overall exemplary score on their report are eligible for the provost’s Excellence in Assessment award. This award is voted on and decided by the University Assessment Council, or UAC, which is an advisory committee that regularly meets to discuss program assessment efforts at Auburn.

This year, 56 programs were eligible to receive the award. The UAC has selected the graduate programs in Biological Sciences as this year’s winner of the provost’s Excellence in Assessment award. Congratulations to the faculty, staff and students of that department, and to Paul Cobine, assessment coordinator for Biological Sciences.
