Auburn University climbs in NSF’s ranking of research institutions

Auburn University has risen in the rankings of research universities nationwide, according to the National Science Foundation’s recently released Higher Education Research and Development, or HERD, survey.

 

Auburn rose from No. 110 to the No. 105 position with $232 million reported in research expenditures for fiscal year 2019. The performance contributes to Auburn’s continued ranking as an R1 research institution with “very high research activity” in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

Don’t miss this year’s Duncan Lecture featuring Deirdre Shoemaker, professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

 

This year’s lecture, How are gravitational waves advancing our understanding of the universe, will take place online via Zoom.

 

Shoemaker is a physics professor and director of the Center for Gravitational Physics at the University of Texas at Austin.  She will discuss how gravitational wave astronomy has increased the scientific understanding of black holes, neutron stars, cosmology and gravitational physics.

The panel includes Wendy Hood (Biological Sciences), Vanessa Falcao (Chemistry and Biochemistry), Akilah Alwan (Geosciences), Jamonica Moore (Chemistry and Biochemistry), and Syndey Provence (Physics), moderated by Stephanie Shepherd (Geosciences).

Graduate student teacher celebrates Pi Day - every day

“I began talking with the department chair and said that I felt like it was a sign that maybe I should pursue a Ph.D. and teach college math because that would be faster than trying to get into this one class,” Kim Holman explained. “The chair told me that she had considered suggesting the idea because she thought I would be a great math professor. So, just like that, I began working towards that goal.”
