New X-ray diffraction instrumentation sets Auburn University apart in Alabama

Ryan Comes, Thomas and Jean Walter assistant professor in the Department of Physics, and Byron Farnum, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, have worked together for three years on research for next-generation materials for electronic and energy applications at Auburn University, and now, they are bringing the best world-class X-ray diffraction instrumentation to the state of Alabama.

Physics faculty member discusses significance of reports that supergiant star Betelgeuse is dimming

Supergiant Betelgeuse—normally the 10th-brightest star in the night sky—made headlines earlier this month based on analysis that has revealed the star dimmed significantly in 2020. The red-colored star—part of the constellation of Orion—is well-known to the science world because it has been observed and studied for centuries and is, at 750 times the size of the sun, easily visible to the naked eye. Melissa Halford, a lecturer in Auburn University’s Department of Physics in COSAM took some time to discuss the popular star, which is roughly 530 light years from Earth.

Students who are interested in beginning undergraduate research were able to explore the wide range of opportunities available to them at the Third Annual Undergraduate Research Opportunities Fair hosted by COSAM. This year, the fair featured 18 undergraduate research labs aiming to connect students to the lab that suits them best.
