“The battle was touch and go with the University of Alabama making a strong fourth quarter push and entering Sunday in the lead of number of observations and species,” said Jon Armbruster, director of the Auburn University Museum of Natural History and curator of fishes. “A strong push by Auburn folks across the entire state saw us crushing the competition in all categories: 17,549 to 17,058 observations, 3,283 to 3,208 species, and 235 to 126 observers.”

The very first Marble Bowl was an opportunity for anyone to take photos of unique observations of nature and upload them to iNaturalist. Each university received points for their submissions with Auburn leading in every category.

“The top five contributors for Auburn University included Vitaly Charny, Craig Guyer, Alvin Diamond, Roger Birkhead and Mary Jane Krotzer. In the Department of Biological Sciences, the top observer was Megan Muell,” he said.

People can continue to take observations and make a contribution to science after this competition has ended.

“iNaturalist allows you to take a picture or record a sound of any living organism and through its artificial intelligence give you an idea of what that species is. The data are stored and can be useful in scientific studies on the distributions of species. You can even enter photos that you have previously taken.  So not only can the program let you know what the species is that you saw, but using it will contribute to scientific knowledge,” Armbruster added.
