Faculty can apply for learning assistants for the spring 2022 semester

Learning assistants are undergraduate students that help facilitate students’ learning in the active learning classrooms.

“These students successfully completed the course they are helping to spark discussions and learning among students,” said Min Zhong, senior lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences and lead program coordinator for the learning assistant program. 

Faculty can apply for learning assistants online until Oct. 15 for their classes for the spring 2022 semester. 

“The learning assistant model supports faculty to transform the course into the student-centered learning environment with meaningful group activities in large classroom settings and directly promotes student engagement and discourse to increase learning and overall retention,” Zhong added. 

Courses that use learning assistants include: 


BIOL 1000 – Introduction to Biology

BIOL 1020 – Principles of Biology (multiple sections)

BIOL 1030 – Organismal Biology (multiple sections)

BIOL 2500 – Human Anatomy and Physiology I

BIOL 3200 – General Microbiology (multiple sections)

BIOL 5500 – Immunology

BIOL 5200 – Clinical Microbiology



CHEM 1030 – Fundamentals of Chemistry I (multiple sections)

CHEM 1040 – Fundamental Chemistry II (multiple sections)

CHEM 1120 – General Chemistry for Scientists and Engineers II

CHEM 1127 – Honors General Chemistry II

CHEM 2030 – Survey of Organic Chemistry

CHEM 2070 – Organic Chemistry I

CHEM 2080 – Organic Chemistry II (multiple sections)



GEOL 1110 – Earth & Life Through Time
