BIRMINGHAM HONOR STUDENT GOT 200,00TH DEGREE FROM AUBURN

AUBURN -- A Birmingham honors student -- Sara B. Hazlett -- was identified as Auburn University's 200,000th degree recipient during spring quarter commencement ceremonies on June 11. With a perfect 4.0 grade-point average, Hazlett earlier was the recipient of the Comer Medal as AU's outstanding student in Biological Sciences and the College of Sciences and Mathematics Dean's Medal for academic excellence. She also participated in the AU's President's Student Leadership Program.

Alfred Brown, head of Auburn's Department of Botany and Microbiology, said it was fitting that Hazlett received the 200,00th degree recognition.

"I wrote a letter of recommendation for her and I called her a renaissance woman," Brown said. "That's what she is. In addition to an outstanding academic record in the sciences, she also studied Shakespeare on summer at Oxford in England and she's done a lot of volunteer work with children and the disabled."

AU's 200,000 degrees date back to 1859 when Auburn was known as East Alabama Male College.
